Order of Operations Worksheet Generator

Pick a convention and a grade, then print. Every sheet has a code that rebuilds it exactly, and an answer key that works each problem one step at a time.

Teacher Pack options

Make a sheet in four steps

  1. Choose PEMDAS, GEMDAS or BODMAS. It changes the instructions and the words in the answer key, not the answers.
  2. Pick a grade. The grade sets sensible options; change any of them afterwards.
  3. Set the number of problems and the layout, and add your own title if you like.
  4. Press Print / Save as PDF. Page 1 is the worksheet; the answer key starts on page 2.

What the answer key shows

One operation per line, with the rule that justifies it. These two are from a grade 6 PEMDAS sheet:

  1. 2 + 9 + 4 + (82 − 20) = 59
    1. Parentheses, exponents: 8² = 642 + 9 + 4 + (64 − 20)
    2. Parentheses: 64 − 20 = 442 + 9 + 4 + 44
    3. Add (left to right): 2 + 9 = 1111 + 4 + 44
    4. Add (left to right): 11 + 4 = 1515 + 44
    5. Add: 15 + 44 = 5959
  2. 6 × 2 × [13 − (70 − 43)] = 84
    1. Parentheses, exponents: 4³ = 646 × 2 × [13 − (70 − 64)]
    2. Parentheses: 70 − 64 = 66 × 2 × [13 − 6]
    3. Parentheses: 13 − 6 = 76 × 2 × 7
    4. Multiply (left to right): 6 × 2 = 1212 × 7
    5. Multiply: 12 × 7 = 8484

How problems are built

Each problem is a random expression that has to pass checks before it reaches the sheet: whole-number levels never produce a fraction partway through, nothing is divided by zero, answers stay within a sensible range, and grouping symbols are written only where the order needs them or where the grade calls for practice with them. Multiplication is always written with ×, never as 2(3 + 4), so there is no ambiguous expression on any sheet.

Questions

What can I do for free?

Make 3 new worksheets a day with up to 20 problems each, print them, save them as PDF or download them as HTML. Free sheets carry a small footer line, and the answer key shows every final answer plus step-by-step work for the first 3 problems. No account is needed.

Do PEMDAS, GEMDAS and BODMAS give different answers?

No. They are three names for the same rules. PEMDAS says parentheses, GEMDAS says grouping symbols, BODMAS says brackets and orders. Every problem on this site has one answer whichever name you pick; only the words in the instructions and the answer-key labels change.

How do I know the answer keys are right?

Every problem is computed with exact fractions, never rounded decimals. Before each release, tens of thousands of generated problems are checked against a second, separately written calculator that reads the printed expression, and every step in the key is checked to keep the same value.

What is the sheet code?

Each worksheet prints a short code such as P6IE-20-1ABC2D. It stores the convention, grade, options, problem count and the random seed. Type it into the Sheet code box and press Load to get the identical sheet and key again, for example to reprint for another class.

How do I save a worksheet as a PDF?

Press Print / Save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF) as the printer. The worksheet prints on the first page and the answer key starts on a new page, so you can print only page 1 for students.

What does the Teacher Pack add?

Teacher Pack is $7, paid once: unlimited worksheets, up to 30 problems, no footer line, step-by-step work for every problem in the key, 5 or 10 versions in one print job, and mixed-difficulty sheets. See pricing.
